THE SECRET OF THE TOMB

From the carefully proportioned gallery spaces, a highly interactive and visual environment takes shape in which the visitors experience and perception will allow them to see old things in a new light

Mummies have evoked awe, fear and mystery in movies, but they tell a much bigger story too – one of life and the afterlife.

Through compelling artefacts with religious and historical signifi­cance, visitors learn about the religious and cultural beliefs behind ancient Egyptian mummification techniques, burial rituals and the civilization’s desire for immortality.

What makes this exhibition unique is the combining of cutting-edge technology with ancient artefacts to produce a new way to visualize and understand their function in Ancient Egyptian life.

The storytelling of this exhibition has been derived from a strategic analysis of the architectural features of Ancient Egypt in an effort to re-interpret and imbue the spaces with a modern interpretation of the scale and proportions of Ancient Egypt.

Bringing together Ancient Egypt’s artefacts with Singapore’s architectural masterpiece, the ArtScience Museum, provided an opportunity to re-think about the procession of the spaces. Complementary to the ArtScience Museum’s curves, the exhibition is conceived as a series of rectangular boxes inserted into the gallery spaces. From the moment visitors arrive until the moment they leave, they will be wrapped in a series of spaces which build in intensity until the viewing of the mummy of Nesperennub in the final dazzling chamber.

Conceived as a participatory journey into the ancient past, Mummy: The Inside Story provides visitors with a state-of-the-art experience and offers a full spectrum of knowledge about the legacy of Ancient Egyptian civilization.
