A BLUE MIRAGE IN THE CITY OF LIGHT

Interpreting the creative nature of light, this installation pays respect to its environment while being an asset, a gem reflecting the surrounding jewels

Singapore enjoys the benefit of an intense and bright light. At night, illuminations reveal the Metropolis to be theatre-like. As such, the spaces metamorphose; people become the protagonists; the city, the décor; and light, the enhancer.

The Marina Bay Light Festival creates an outdoor celebration in an urban context of iconic buildings and landmarks, enveloped by a warm, gold tint. Interpreting the creative nature of light, this installation pays respect to its environment while being an asset, a gem reflecting the surrounding jewels. Day and night, a prismatic effect mirrors cityscapes and the lights, encouraging public participation at any time.

In order to achieve a kinetic effect, 16 ensembles of 2100mm height 20/20 laminated glass are installed, offset and rotated along two opposing lines. The external side of each glazing ensemble is highly reflective, while the PVB interlayer has a specific polarizing treatment.

A line of artificial white cold light is added onto one edge of each glazing ensemble. As a technology of the future, the preferred lighting feature is LED due to its low energy consumption and running cost. Furthermore, this technology presents the advantage of emitting a white cold light that is the ideal counterpart to Marina Bay’s gold-tinged context.

Overall, this association results in a breathtaking outcome. Progressively, the installation diffuses light shadows from natural to artificial light sources from the surrounding areas. The dialogue between virtual, reflected city images and views of the urban surroundings through the sculptural light and glass artwork creates memorable experiences for the observer.

This light mirage both enhances ­and harmonises with the cityscape’s dazzling illuminations.
