This gradual strategy involves opening up a platform for ideas for current, potential and future users. The process starts today, with a clear objective of working towards a better tomorrow.
Crisis as an opportunity
Due to Gera’s financial restrictions, the cost of the project shall remain minimal. Use of recycled materials, temporary structures and flexible architecture allow for more innovative measures of exploration, while keeping costs low. Working towards the possibility of growth gives Gera the chance of having lasting, sustainable change.
The 3 phases
Step1 | 2017: ’Seeds’ are planted.
Temporary elements are planted on four strategic locations. The site is divided into a grid generating plots. These are made available for free to interested participants. A supervised participation programme is conducted by the IBA pavilion.
Step2 | 2023: Temporary or permanent?
The project is assessed. After which, the more successful elements would remain and be made permanent, while others disappear.
Step3 | 2030: City centre 2
Specialists of architecture, landscaping and urban planning observe and guide the programme development towards a sustainable ensemble. Density, building heights, accessibility and aesthetics are monitored. What was once a derelict land is transformed into a vibrant space.
