This whimsical installation imagines a facsimile of Singapore’s island-city growing and building under her present one.
In this fantastical city, nothing is destroyed; new buildings are added to the cityscape, over and through existing older buildings, creating a layered architectural form that still bears bearing visible traces of its earlier iterations. The sculpture draws our eye to ornaments, frames and façade detailing in our local architectures that often escape the eye. The sculpture references the shophouses and I.M. Pei’s iconic skyscraper in the Singapore financial district, OCBC building.
This installation is inspired by artist and writer Jason Wee’s short story, “The City Beneath The City”.
The art installation is displayed for the annual district-wide event in Singapore, Light to Night 2022 , and Textures 2022.
