The Disappearance of Modern History in Southeast Asia: The Case of Pearl Bank Apartments in Singapore
The disappearance of modern history in Singapore is poetically represented by a model of the Pearl Bank Apartments – a pioneering icon of modern history buildings in Singapore. It is an installation designed and curated by WY-TO for the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2021.
The model re-enacts the iconic horseshoe form of the building while its transparency draws parallels with the void it has created in the city, caused by its demolition. Visitors will be able to appreciate the architectural uniqueness of this icon while exploring microsites, consisting of various digital contacts like short videos and graphics. Visitors can also virtually interact with the model using AR to witness the gradual erasure of Peal Bank. The installation serves as a reminder of what has been lost as a result of the demolition culture and a stepping stone to kick start conversations regarding the conservation of architecture.
