Codes and conventions of exhibition design have been explored to present artwork from the nineteenth century versus the twentieth century
Presenting a complex and varied collection of thousands of works from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (in media including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography and video) within two gazetted national monuments was a task of considerable complexity. Underpinning the design approach is the intent to offer a ‘promenade’ experience of the collections and the building interiors. The exhibition design for the two permanent collections, elected to focus on colour, light and vistas, supports the visitor’s reading
of the diverse artworks and the architectural heritage. The role of the exhibition design is to put the focus on the collection and the monuments, and to be timeless and non-intrusive. A consistent approach to the vocabulary of the exhibition components ties together the two shows, with a common language of partitions, showcase elements, visual corridors, and the use of colour.

La déclinaison des codes et des conventions scénographiques a permis de présenter aussi bien les oeuvres du XIX ème que du XXème siècle.
Une réflexion précise et éloquente a rendu possible la présentation d’un ensemble complexe et varié de pres de mille œuvres du XIXe et XXe siècles (peinture, sculpture, gravure, photographie et vidéo) dans les deux monuments nationaux classés les plus importants de Singapour. L’intention était d’offrir une expérience de « promenade » dans le bâtiment et à travers les collections. La conception scénographique des deux collections permanentes met l’accent sur la couleur, la lumière et les vues. Aussi, elle accompagne le visiteur dans son approche
des oeuvres et du patrimoine architectural. La scénographie se veut intemporelle et non-intrusive afin de valoriser les œuvres dans ce lieu patrimonial.
Une approche cohérente des divers éléments scénographiques lie les œuvres au contexte, en déclinant un vocabulaire commun dans le traitement des partitions, des vitrines, des circulations et dans l’utilisation de la couleur.
