Evoking memories to rekindle the sense of belonging in a community
Husband-and-wife artist duo Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan create works through the process of collecting and collaborating, using materials such as cardboard boxes and personal artefacts to illustrate the ideas of home, migration, family, and memory.
As part of the Gallery Children’s Biennale 2021, the artists have created an immersive, large-scale phygital installation titled Head/Home. On-site, a collaborative workshop was conducted to involve children in the creation of small houses that contribute to the final installation, introducing the ideas of thinking and working with their hands. An online counterpart to the exhibit encourages children to continue the process of creating in their own homes. Children are invited to craft their own cardboard houses and submit them online to be featured in an ever-growing virtual floating city. These homes can also double up as wearable masks! In the Gallery of Self-Portraits, children may take a selfie with their creations and share their stories while discovering those of others.
Through familiar landmarks and interactive workshops, the installation encourages children to be imaginative and express what their idea of home is.
