‘Les Studios Laumière’ are a social innovative project dedicated to professional musicians.
In collaboration with Toit et Joie, WY-TO are finalists of the international competition Reinventing Paris The subterranean secrets of Paris with the socially and culturally innovative project “The Studios Laumière”.
The Studios Laumière offer a new musical destination for the 19th district, a lively and artistic neighborhood of Paris. The Studios Laumière comprises of a residential housing for musicians and at the same time, a place of training and creativity, dedicated to both professionals and amateurs. This versatile program can also double-up as a performance & event venue opened to the local community and Parisians at large.
The cultural ambition of the project is to transform the basement and the ground floor of the former electrical distribution center into an animated artistic incubator. It’s a place of creation where musicians can meet a community of professionals sharing complementary skills. Outdoor spaces are created at all levels with the intention to bring natural light into all collaborative spaces.
The social innovation of Studios Laumière lies in the creation of a cultural center acting as the link between the rehabilitated building and the new addition. By creating an extension of seven levels in timber lightweight structure, Studios Laumière offer soundproofed apartments specially adapted for musicians to practice their instruments without interference. Inspired by the Community Land Trust developed in USA and North-Europe, the OFS-BRS innovative legal system aims to offer an alternative to private ownership of the land and to regulate price inflation of real estate and inequalities in access to housing. Acoustic challenges which are inherent to this specific program, initiate a system of non-parallel partitions which enhance the sound, giving rise to a truly unique building form. More than a metaphor of the musical wave, the main facade represents the stylized partition of a barbaric organ, a popular street instrument associated to the vintage image of Paris. Façade panels are perforated following a score specially created by a contemporary composer. Residents and strollers will be able to play this original score through a dedicated application. Studios Laumière ambition to be an exemplary project participating in the fight against global warming by developing a bioclimatic design, repurposing and upcycling existing resources of the site and introducing biodegradable materials. The project revitalizes the urban biodiversity by growing indigenous plants in a greenhouse sitting on top of the building and allowing natural pollination through the cultivation of bee hives.

‘Les Studios Laumière’ are a social innovative project dedicated to professional musicians.
Les Studios Laumière offrent une nouvelle adresse musicale inédite dans le 19ème arrondissement, quartier vivant et artistique de Paris. A la fois habitat résidentiel pour musiciens et lieu de création et de formation pour professionnels et amateurs, les Studios Laumière sont aussi un lieu de représentation, de rencontre et d’ouverture pour le quartier.
L’ambition culturelle du projet redonne accès au sous-sol et au rez-de-chaussée en réhabilitant l’ancien centre de répartition en un incubateur artistique, lieu de création et de mise en relation de musiciens professionnels et de la communauté de professionnels aux compétences complémentaires. Afin de rendre ce lieu agréable, des espaces extérieurs sont créés à tous les niveaux et les apports de lumière naturelle sont développés.
L’innovation sociale des Studios Laumière réside dans la création d’un espace culturel, articulation entre le dessous et le dessus dans la continuité d’une pratique musicale et artistique professionnelle ou amateur. Par la création d’une surélévation de sept niveaux de logements en structure légère, les Studios Laumière offrent des logements locatifs innovants techniquement et insonorisés pour la pratique musicale ou des logements innovants juridiquement par les prix maîtrisés de l’accession sociale via l’OFS-BRS (les acquéreurs sont propriétaires de leur logement et locataires du terrain sur lequel il est construit).
Les Studios Laumière sont nés de la question de la forme bâtie pour accompagner l’acoustique du bâtiment. Ainsi la ‘déparallélisation’ des cloisons donne leur forme originale aux logements et offre une métaphore de l’onde musicale en façade, représentant la partition stylisée d’un orgue de barbarie, instrument de rue et à l’image parisienne et populaire. Cette partition est une œuvre interactive confiée à un compositeur contemporain dont les habitants et les passants pourront jouer par l’entremise d’une application dédiée.
Par sa conception bioclimatique frugale et une végétalisation des terrasses, les Studios Laumière ont l’ambition d’être un projet exemplaire, à la hauteur des défis à relever pour lutter contre le réchauffement climatique. Le principe est de privilégier la conservation de l’existant, le réemploi, l’utilisation de matériaux biosourcés et l’utilisation des ressources existantes sur le site.
Dans les espaces verts créés, les Studios Laumière ambitionnent de repenser la relation entre les citadins et les éléments composant le patrimoine naturel parisien par la création d’une pépinière de quartier qui valorise les plantes indigènes d’Ile-de-France. L’installation de ruches favorise la biodiversité grâce à la pollinisation par les abeilles.
